Lieutenant General Jiang Commemorates Bian Ligan, the Hero from the Battle of Guningtou

Lieutenant General Jiang led members of the command to Chongxiao Memorial Tower in Tainan to attend a solemn commemoration for Bian Ligan on the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Guningtou. Bian Ligan, also known as Zhigang, was born from Boxian, Henan on February 15, 1922. He devoted himself in the defense of his country after graduating from the prefecture high school and participated in the Battles of Taierzhuang and Changsha. In 1949, Bian was lieutenant captain of ROC 80th Army 201 division regiment 601 2nd camp unit 2 and was stationed in the defense of Kinmen with his mentor General Zheng Guo. When the Battle of Guningtou erupted on October 25, Bian fought admirably, resulting in injury of both his eyes; after treatment, his left eye was removed while his right eye suffered from amblyopia, leaving him with a second-grade war disability. He was honorably discharged as captain in 1958 and given care by the Veterans Affair Council. He passed away in July 1994 and his remains are preserved at Chongxiao Memorial Tower, Tainan.

Bian came to Taiwan with his government and devoted his life to protecting his country, forgoing wife and return to his homeland. Review of historical documents detailing the Battle of Guningtou found that his name was mistakenly recorded as Bian Lizhong; his name has been amended in historical documents. While our forefathers have long drifted 70 years after the Battle of Guningtou, this trip is a tribute to commemorate the historical significance of fallen brethren.
